How To Introduce Your Skin To Retinol

If you’ve been diving into the world of skincare, you’ve probably heard about Retinol—a superstar ingredient celebrated for its anti-ageing benefits.

But if you’re new to Retinol, introducing it into your routine can feel a bit intimidating. That’s why we asked our Ultra Skin Experts for tips on how (and why) to add it to your current line-up.

What is Retinol?

Retinol is a form of Vitamin A that works wonders to improve the visible signs of premature skin ageing. It boosts cell turnover, encouraging the removal of old, dead skin cells and the growth of new ones. This process helps clear clogged pores, minimises breakouts, and stimulates collagen production - which is essential for maintaining skin elasticity. As a result, fine lines are plumped and smoothed and your skin will appear radiant and rejuvenated.

Convinced? Great. Here’s how to begin.

Start Slow.

When starting out with Retinol, it’s important to not overwhelm your skin and instead, gradually introduce it into your routine. You can begin with a gentler formula like Ultra A Perfecting Serum Mild; this product contains an effective but moderate level of our Retinome technology® microparticles to improve the skin condition and smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles for a youthful-looking, and radiant complexion.

Apply a pea-sized amount evenly to freshly cleansed skin, avoiding the eye area. We suggest doing this once every other evening to build tolerance.

Layer a hydration serum such as Ultra B² Hydrating Serum on top, followed by a moisturiser. Look for moisturisers with hydrating and calming ingredients like Hyaluronic Acid and Ceramides to keep your skin calm and nourished.

After a month, you can increase your retinol usage to daily application, and then consider moving up to a higher strength, like Ultra A Perfecting Serum, for even more impressive results.

Combine Wisely.

While your skin is getting used to Retinol, be mindful of how you combine it with other active ingredients in the same product line-up. Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) and Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs) are great for exfoliation but can increase sensitivity when used with Retinol. If you love using acids, consider using them on days when you’re not using Retinol. If you enjoy Vitamin C - like our Ultra C Firming Serum, use it in the morning.

This way, you can reap the benefits of both without overwhelming your skin.

Always Apply SPF.

Retinol can make your skin more sensitive to UVA rays, so ensure your skin is well-protected with a broad spectrum sunscreen. Don’t forget to apply and (reapply) SPF every 2 hours all over your face, neck and ears.
