The skin barrier is the outermost layer of your skin, that defends your body against environmental threats while simultaneously protecting your body’s critical water balance. ​

​Your barrier is not alive and is made up of dead cells, lipids, proteins and fats that help protect your skin from the environment and external aggressor, while also helping retain the good things inside.​

1. Protects against external factors: Our environment consists of various elements such as climate, pollution, UV rays, humidity level and many other factors. Our skin’s barrier makes it more resilient to these stressors by preventing development of bacteria, infection or sun damage. ​
